Checklist: What you need for a perfect day on the slopes

If you're dreaming of fresh powder, crisp mountain air, and the thrill of carving down snowy slopes, it's time to dust off your ski and snowboard gear. But before you head out, make sure you’ve packed everything you need for an unforgettable day on the mountain. Here’s a handy checklist to help you prepare:

1. The essentials: great gear

Skis and poles

  • Skis or snowboard: Choose your weapon of choice! Make sure your skis or snowboard are tuned up, with edges sharpened and bases waxed.

  • Bindings: Properly adjusted bindings are crucial for both safety and performance. Make sure they're set to your specifications.

  • Ski boots: Comfortable, well-fitted boots are a game-changer. Double-check that yours are in good condition (e.g. not wet from the day before).

  • Poles: For skiers, a reliable set of poles helps maintain balance and rhythm. Make sure they’re the right height for you.

2. Dress for success: the layering strategy

  • Base layer: Start with moisture-wicking thermals to keep you warm and dry. Avoid cotton – it gets soggy fast.

  • Mid layer: A light fleece or warmer down jacket for insulation will do it. Think warmth without bulk.

  • Outer layer: A waterproof, windproof ski jacket and pants are needed to protect you against the elements.

  • Accessories: Don't forget a warm hat (or better: a comfy helmet), neck gaiter, goggles, and waterproof gloves or mittens. Cold fingers and ears can ruin a great day!

3. Safety first: protection

  • Helmet: Protect your noggin! Accodring to us, a helmet is non-negotiable for any skier or snowboarder – especially for kids.

  • Goggles: Snow reflects sunlight intensely, and a good pair of UV-protected goggles will save you from snow blindness or harsh winds.

  • Sunscreen and lip balm: Yes, you can get sunburned on the slopes, quite easily indeed. Protect your skin and lips from sun and wind exposure.

  • For freeriders: Avalanche beacon (transceiver), probe, shovel and maybe an avalanche airbag backpack: Must-haves for locating and being located by others in case of an avalanche. Make sure you know how to use it properly.

4. Backpack: your mountain companion

A small, lightweight backpack can be a lifesaver on the slopes. Here’s what to pack inside:

  • Extra layers: A lightweight fleece or spare underwear for when temperatures drop.

  • Sunglasses and warm hat: For your break at the mountain hut

  • Mini first-aid kit: Just the basics – band-aids, blister pads, emergency blanket and pain relievers.

  • Sunscreen and lip balm: For quick reapplications throughout the day to protect against sun and windburn.

  • Optional: hand warmers: A quick fix for icy fingers on a cold day.

  • Optional: snacks and water: High-energy snacks like nuts, granola bars, or dried fruit, plus a water bottle or hydration pack to keep you fueled and hydrated.

5. Tech and extras

  • Phone or action camera: For snapping those epic mountain selfies or recording your downhill runs. Make sure it’s fully charged and secure in a waterproof case.

  • Ski pass and ID: Keep your pass handy, and always carry an ID in case of emergencies.

  • Map of the slopes: Know where you’re going. Grab a trail map or download an app to help you navigate the mountain.

6. Après-ski: optional for party people

  • Comfortable shoes: After a day in ski boots, your feet will thank you for bringing along some comfy shoes.

  • Change of clothes: Dry socks and a cozy sweater will make everything taste better.

  • Cash or card: You never know when you’ll need a little extra for a hot drink or a bite to eat at the lodge.

With this checklist in hand, you’re all set for an epic day on the slopes. So, pack your bag, wax those skis, and let the mountain adventure begin!

See you on the slopes!
